This article will provide details about what employees can expect when they interact with the Break feature on Sling. If you are an admin looking for more details about how to adjust your company's break settings, please visit this page.
Automated Breaks
If automated breaks have been enabled for your company, you will receive reminders to take your breaks according to the length of your shift and the rules applied to your company's break settings.
On the web:
To start your break, navigate to the Dashboard and click “Start break.”
With automated breaks, you will also have to choose the type of break that you are starting: either a meal break or a rest break. For accounts that have both meal and rest breaks programmed, employees can choose to start a rest break or a meal break.
Please note that you will not have access to begin a break until you have been clocked in for 2 hours.
When you begin a break, you'll see what time you started, so that you can keep track of when you'll need to return to work.
You'll also be able to receive reminders that your break is ending.
If you attempt to end your break too early and your employer does not allow for the early ending of breaks, you will get a notice indicating that you have more time left on your break.
When you clock out for the end of your shift, you'll notice any breaks you did not take or that you ended earlier highlighted in red. That way if there is something you need to provide details about, you can include a timesheet note for managers to review.
If attestation is also enabled on the account and you did not take a required break, you will be prompted to confirm whether or not you took the break when you clock out of your shift.
This video shows what the attestation feature looks like in real time.
On the mobile app:
The process for starting and ending breaks on the mobile app is very similar to the process on the web.
To start your break, tap “Start break” on the Dashboard.
On the mobile app, you won’t see what time you started your break, but you will see how many minutes you have until your break is over.
Standard Breaks
On the web:
Similar to automated breaks, you’ll start your break from the Dashboard by clicking “Start break.”
When you’re ready to end your break, you’ll click “End break” on the Dashboard.
On the mobile app:
There is an additional step on the mobile app. To start your break, tap “Start break” on the Dashboard.
This will take you to another screen, on which you will also need to tap “Start break.”
To end your break, tap “End break” on the Dashboard.
As with starting the break, you will have to tap “End break” on the next screen as well to end the break.
Please note: All employees will be able to see Dashboard notifications within the Sling app (as long as they have not been disabled), but it's important that you have also enabled push notifications in order to receive reminders directly on your phone.
