These steps establish the main PTO settings for the account. Once in place, you can also set up individual caps for your employees in their profiles.

Admins can go to the Time off settings (Dashboard > Settings > Time Off) to locate the section for Time off types.

Enabling the paid time off setting will expand additional options so the feature will match your company's setup.

Choose the reset date format, first.

  • Common date means that you will set one date on which all employees' caps will reset (such as January 1).

  • Hire date means that each employee's caps will reset based on the hire date set in their profiles.

Next, you can choose how to cap time off.

  • Choosing to cap by leave type will allow you to set the maximum hours for a full day of PTO, and choose whether you set the cap by number of days or number of hours. You will then designate which types of PTO are covered and set the number of days or hours allowed for one year, for each type. You will also see the option to allow unpaid leave.

  • Choosing to cap in aggregate allows you to designate the total number of days or hours allowed for the year as a whole, and then choose which types are covered. All types will pull from the main cap you've set. So if you allow 31 days of PTO, an employee can choose to use all of it as vacation or can split it up between vacation, sick, personal, etc.

Once your settings are in place, you will see your caps reflected in the time off modal any time you or an employee attempt to add or request time off. Any PTO that has already been used will be reflected so you know exactly how much leave an employee still has available (e.g. 1/21).

These main cap settings will also be mirrored in each employee's profile, and can be adjusted individually to account for employees who are not yet eligible or who have earned more due to length of time with the company.

Note that it is not possible to customize the categories of time off that Sling has. There is an "Other" option available to use, if you have a category of PTO that is not included in the other types listed.
